Chapter 22

Marcus smoothed his thumb over my hand. “We can’t stay here.”

“What? Why?”

“I don’t have time to explain. I need to get you out of here.”

“Because of Aaron?” I asked. “Jo said he’s leaving.”

Marcus edged closer. “No. It’s not because of Aaron.”

“Then why?”

Marcus lifted my legs at the knees, unfolding them as he shifted my legs over his thighs. “This time’s different.” He smoothed his hand over my thigh as if he’d done it a million times. The fire burning within me was like nothing I’d ever experienced. Yet, there was a part of me, deep within my soul, that loved the familiarity of his hands on me.

“What’s going on? I asked, trying to make sense of the way I was feeling. “Why do I feel as if…? Why am I in love with a guy I’ve only just met?”

He released his breath slowly, a mixture of pain and relief in his eyes. I inched closer to him, aching to make the pain go away. Before I knew it, I’d climbed onto his lap, straddling him. And God, it felt good. It felt right.

His hands closed around my hips, and he tipped his head down, resting his forehead against mine. All questions were forgotten. All urgency was gone. I wanted to stay in the safe haven of his arms for the rest of eternity.

Tipping my chin up, I brushed my lips over his. He cupped the nape of my neck with his hand, bringing my lips back to his when I went to pull away. The tenderness of his kiss soon deepened into a sweet, searing kiss, further igniting the fire that would forever burn in my soul.

Emotions swirled within me as an unexplainable relief slowly flooded not only from my heart but also my mind. Everything about him seemed familiar but new at the same time. It was as if I’d kissed him a thousand times before—but not like this. This time was different. This time I knew him.

The more I kissed him, the more I remembered. Flashes of us together sharing precious moments in our lives but also the mundane moments like shopping at the markets or cleaning up after a meal. What I didn’t understand was how I had these memories in a time when I wasn’t alive. I looked the same but different, and so did Marcus.

His love for me was evident in everything he did. I was everything to him. I was also his undoing. Snippets of that haunted look he so often displayed was evident in the eyes of the man in my memories.

Marcus gripped my shoulders as he slowly eased up and placed a soft kiss on the corner of my lips then another on my jaw.

Closing my eyes, I tipped my head back as he trailed a line of tender kisses over the bruises on my neck, stopping when he reached the edge of my sweater.

Pulling me back up, he stared into my eyes. His breaths were coming out just as unevenly as mine, and he looked to be fighting the same desires I was.
